I don't really know how to say this, but it seems the creator of this movie decided to put all ingredients from previously successful movies into one big blender, give it a good stir and then market the resulting tasteless slur that came out of it.
ReplyDeleteThe following is a short summary of the plot, in case you want to save yourself the trouble (SPOILERS !!):
--------------------------------------
The Story starts with the typical crew of a spacecraft, 40 years after leaving Earth due to a climatic breakdown of the ecosystem. While investigating a planet in hope of finding a place to set up camp, everything goes south and everyone crashes into whats looks like the set of 'Breaking Bad', right in the middle of a reddish desert. From there on she gets attacked by a group of looters copied out of 'Mad Max', who then in turn get eaten by Orcs. The heroine barely escapes and after finding out her captain is still alive, starts to make her way across the desert armed with a bow 'Hunger Games' style with a little touch 'Lord of the Rings', fighting off more faceless looters and wild animals right out of any alien movie ever made. The latter to save a horse, which turns the movie into the 'Horse Whisperer' (Thank god for the riding lessons seemingly mandatory for starship crews). What follow now is central plot arch of a badly wounded commander (as seen in 'After Eart') telling the apprentice heroine how to activate the emergency transponder. After almost getting eaten by space-Orcs, and getting saved over and over by a "good scavenger" (fluent of course in both, future-earth-speak and old-school English) she decides to team up (including "stitch the wound on may back while tell you my life"-scene). Wait a second.... replace those gas masks with ape-masks and you are right in the middle of 'Planet of the Apes'. And in case you haven't figured it out before, the helpful gas-masked assailant will tell you directly, what everyone should know by know: Oh my god, this is Earth! After finding her captain, and rescuing the lost daughter of our helpful, muscular, multilingual scavenger, the movie goes underground 'The Descent' style including small corridors, hordes of Orcs and heroic characters staying behind to save the rest. And of course, the final battle between the leader of the "evil hordes" and the helpful one, as seen in 'Postman'.
-------------------------------------------
Summary: Lots of running through deserts, rock-climbing, punching gas-masked assailants and space-Orcs, leg-grabbing, panicking and rolling around in dirt.
My Tipp: Save yourself the trouble and just watch the originals
- Planet of the Apes - Lord of the Rings - Hunger Games - The Descent - The Horse Whisperer - After Earth (with limitations regarding entertainment value)
This "movie" is about a running blond pretty girl. Originally she came from a spaceship, but that does not matter very much. The story is paper thin or to say it precisely, there is no story. It is one of that stories which is that flat, that it bends time and space and you know not only from the beginning how this movie will end, you will just know the complete plot. Thats because you have seen this story in 10 other equal cheap "Oh no! My spaceship crashed!" scifi movies. I am pretty sure the screenplay was not longer then. "Ships having an accident, then pretty girl runs around, kills some evil dudes, finds a horse yadayadayada the end." Its one of that movies you can watch when you already planned to fall asleep at you're couch or when you are drunk like a skunk and want to watch some easy nothing. If you watching it sober, you will for sure fast forward half of the movie.
ReplyDeleteFirst off you really do have to hand to to this entire crew for creating a movie this big in scope completely through Kickstarter. This is a fully fleshed out scifi movie that sadly falls so flat. There is so much over acting, and way too much video game style leveling up as the story progressed.
ReplyDeleteSimple things that make no sense like a comm system that seems to increase it's capabilities as we get 20 minutes further in. A strange race of Morlock types who seem fine with the sun, and still were shredded clothes that they could never have worn to begin with that look like stretch Armstrong, but they all go down with one punch.
I kept trying to like this movie just for the sake of it, but there are just too many of those. A race of strange people speaking Klingon or something that can understand English just fine (The Queen's English at that).
The action would be good enough if it wasn't so over the top, and over acted. The week are feeble, and the strong are not always strong. Kate can lift herself up a mountain with her arms, but has trouble on a horse, and they did say "gravity normal" when they first landed. Last thing really "Taking on water" where? then she was just floating under the water.
Saturday afternoon popcorn stuff here. This is the movie you will watch while you clean the TV room.
I really liked the special effects, most of the green screen was handled well, and the story is just too much like a loose Seventies kind of thing before real science started getting into science fiction stories.
I Enjoyed the end result even though I was shaking my head a lot, so I say if you like movies where women kick but, and climb stuff, then this is that, and there are space ships too.
First of all this is a low budget independent science fiction movie, so comparisons with mainstream productions are relative for me. Anyone, who expects space battles or hordes of monsters in the same shot, will be disappointed. So for that mini budget the result is quite good. The space scenes are nice, I like the music and also the costumes for the mutants are not bad. I also enjoyed a lovely Danielle Chuchran running around, climbing up every single mountain in her way and performing all stunts and fighting scenes on her own.
ReplyDeleteBUT: The story is quite thin and questionable. In my opinion it is not logical at so many points with many questions (spoilers ahead): What exactly happened to earth and how did people and horses (!) survive? Humankind wanted to adjust Earth's orbit via particle accelerators and created wormholes throughout the galaxies instead? What??? They allow time travel, or was it time dilation like in the Planet of the Apes? Where are these super-fast-built fancy mother ships flying around? How can people and wolves mutate that much within some hundred years? In The Time Machine that took "realistic" 800k years. Why did Kate never took off the helmet of a warrior? Why did those Mad Max people wear masks at all and create a new silly language, when they speak English fluently? Anyone counted Kate's arrows? The distances and times to travel between places do not make much sense. And of course I tell my friend that she will die now instead of telling her, how fresh the air is and how beautiful that new planet is! And there was more and a lot of clichés.
The sad part for me is that it would have been so easy to avoid this: Take time manipulating worm holes as given by nature, forget Earth (this is not After Earth), choose a different planet with a lot of monsters (although Riddick did this), where another mother ship crash landed some centuries ago to have a post-apocalyptic human society and a transmitter, count your arrows, take of a mask, get your hands dirty while climbing, speak English, leave your shirt on, tell Anne that it is OK, kill that annoying Weston earlier and let Hayley live. And please let that scout ship break much closer to the ground during an emergency landing! You cannot just fall out of orbit for many reasons!! Uhhh, I am getting angry again. Nevertheless, since I like Danielle Chuchran and support indie movies, I give maximal 6/10.
